“But suddenly Jonas had noticed, following the path of the apple through the air with his eyes, that the piece of fruit had–well, this was the part that he couldn’t adequately understand–the apple had changed. Just for an instant. It had changed in mid-air, he remembered. Then it was in his hand, and he looked at it carefully, but it was the same apple. Unchanged. The same size and shape: a perfect sphere. The same nondescript shade, about the same shade as his own tunic. “
When Jonas looked at the apple Asher had thrown him he saw something, something that made him different however he didn’t know it, all he knew was that he saw something in that apple, something he couldn’t describe, something long lost but not forgotten. When he goes home with the apple to anylise it as well as ask his family however they knew nothing, he carefully anylised it until there was an announcement indirectly targeting him.
This was an important part of the book, it sets up the plot a bit, with Jonas noticing the Colour on the apple he starts to get in the mind set that things may not be as they seem, and that others don’t notice them yet he does. Another reason why this could of been a crucial part of the story is that the Elders knew that he found something weird about the apple, why else would he take it home and break the rules? That may of had some infuence in making him the receiver of memories setting up the plot of the book
